All products designed and manufactured by RioOutdoors will last beyond a lifetime. In fact, after 20 years of weather exposure, the lumber members may degrade or rot away, However, the RioOutdoors produced parts will last well beyond the lifetime of lumber members.

Packaging quality comprises of correct parts, correct quantities, proper fillers and box, and accurate and informative labels.
RioOutdoors uses double-walled cardbord boxes to place each bracket with all hardware required to assemble and attach the bracket, in bags, taped to the inside surface of the bracket. The box label contains the bracket part number, description, and a QR Code which links to the bracket’s specific installation instructions video or .pdf file.
The value of packing the requried hardware with the individual bracket translates to the DIY customer finding the bracket and hardware together where and when it is needed. Mounting on a fixed frame in square or rectangle openings in walls and ceilings, or over windows is possible.
This louver kit can be mounted on any fixed vertcial framed square or rectangle opening. In this configuration, the louver slats can be oriented horizontally or vertically.
This louver kit can be mounted in ceilings between rafters or in a framed opening to act as sunshades and partial rain shields. Although these louvers will stop rainfall from directly entering the living space when closed, the gaps between the 1×4 slats, the gaps between the U-clips, and the main brackets will allow water to drip into the living space.
This louver kit can be mounted to a door-type or window-type hinged frame. This will allow you to open and close the frame like a window or a door.
This louver kit can be mounted to a door-type or window-type sliding frame. Sliding mechanisms can be of any type available in the market. Commonly available types are:

The most common applications will employ the horizontal orientation, meaning that the louver slats are mounted horizontally, the slat length runs left to right, and the slats rotate up and down.

The louver bracket kits are designed to use dimensional 1×4 lumber measuring 3/4″ x 3-1/2″.
There are many varieties of wood slats available in dimensional 1×4 size.
The types of wood you can use are limited only by their availability in the required dimensional 1×4 size.
The wood you select is determined by cosmetic requirements, durability requirements, and your budget.

Composite Wood Slats are NOT recommended
Composite wood slats are NOT recommended because they are too flexible in the length direction. This flexible characteristic causes sagging and bowing which is not desirable.
A tape measure in good condition is required to accurately measure lengths of lumber members and framed openings.
A miter saw is recommended for making straight cuts as required a the louver slats’ ends. Do not use a circular saw to make louver slats’ end cuts. A miter saw provides accurate straight cuts when compared to a common circular saw.
A drill gun (electric drill) is required to predrill pilot holes in the louver slats and to drive screws, as needed.
A framing level is recommended to check plumb and level of framed openings.
A 1/16″ pilot hole is required before driving the #6 screws in dry wood slats. The pilot hole will prevent the wood slats from cracking.
A #2 Phillips Screwdriver is required to drive #6 Phil Hd screws to secure louver slats to the louver U-clips.

A framing hammer with, at least, a 16 oz head is required to hammer in concrete bull anchors into concrete pads and concrete footings.
A framing level, 4 feet long, is recommended to check plumb of posts and level of headers and ridge rafters.
A racket & socket drivers are recommended to fully drive lag screws.
The 1/4″ x 1-1/4″ Lag Screws have a 7/16″ hex head. A 7/16″ Socket is required to drive the 7/16″ head lag screws.
The 3/8″ x 3″ Lag Screws used for raftered pergola brackets have a 3/8″ hex head. A 9/16″ Socket is required to drive the 3/8″ head lag screws.
A 3/32″ pilot hole is required if driving 1/4″ diameter lag screws into lumber.
Before driving 1/4″ diameter lag screws into lumber, a 3/32″ pilot hole, hole depth equal to length of screw, must be drilled to prevent the wood from cracking and to allow full lag screw penetration.
An 11/64″ pilot hole is required if driving 3/8″ diameter lag screws lumber.

1/2″ diameter x 2-3/4″ concrete bull anchor bolts are included with floor anchor brackets. These anchors are to be employed to secure floor anchor brackets to concrete pads and concrete footings.
Use the 1/2″ x 4″ masonry drill bit to drill 1/2″ x 2-1/4″ deep holes in concrete pads and concrete footings.
A hammer drill (electric drill with optional hammer mode) is required to predrill holes in concrete pads, concrete footings, and masonry walls before proper anchor hardware are installed to secure floor anchor brackets or wall anchor brackets.
A 10″ compound miter saw is recommended for making straight, angled, and compound angled cuts as required. A 10″ sized saw will have the capability to cut compound angles in lumber members up to 2x8s.
Alternatively, a sliding compound miter saw can be used as a better alternative. Sliding compound miter saws have the capability to cut lumber members up to 2x12s and beyond.
