Hexagon Size

  • The size shown in the kit description (e.g., 9-1/2ft. to 12-1/2ft. Wide Solid Roof) defines the width between two parallel hexagon walls.
  • The size of a hexagon structure is defined by the outer width dimension between two parallel walls of the hexagon structure.
  • To determine what size hexagon will fit in the space available in your yard, include and add the extra space required for the roof overhangs past the hexagon walls. We recommend a 12″ roof overhang past the hexagon walls.
  • The living space you can create ranges between 50 sq. ft and 345 sq. ft.
  • Detailed specifications for header length to hexagon size and living area are provided in the Instructions Manual.

 

Lumber size

  • Lumber NOT included.
  • Uses dimensional 4×4 posts and headers lumber members.
  • For the roof structure rafters, use 2×6 or 2×8 sized lumber members. 2×6 is structurally more than adequate for all sizes, however, 2×8 may be preferable for cosmetic enhancement.

    Very happy with our purchase of this 4×4 Hexagon Solid Roof Kit. There were 6 unique parts in the kit. The bottom structure used 2 parts: hex elbow and floor anchor. The roof used 4 parts: Spider, cross tie bracket, post top rafter tie bracket, and roof skirt bracket. We downloaded the instructions for lower structure and roof structure. Lower structure was very simple. Roof structure was more complex but the instructions included cut layouts for every single piece of wood and also full assembly instructions for placement location and how to for every other part. Most amazing was the nesting diagrams for the roof plywood pieces. We replicated the nested plywood by snapping lines.
    Best of all, every piece of wood and plywood fit easily. No modificaiton was needed and nothing was wasted. With 2 days between 2 people, we had the roof shingled and finished.
    We are very happy with how everything went together and the supporting documents available to us. We highly recommend product from this company.

    RioOutdoors sent us a layout with how to create a hexagon shaped frame using OSB to layout the exact location of each post. It took a hour to build. We laid it out in the area where we wanted the gazebo to be built. Spray paint marked the corner points and we know exactly where each post was going to be. Then we dug at each post location, add round footing forms, leveled them all using a laser level and poured concrete. This was the hardest work. Remaining contruction work was busy but very easy. We really appreciate the extra effort the staff put in to make it easy for us to layout. We surely recommend.

    Started by building an open top 4×4 hexagon. We were impressed with how easy and fast we were able to build it. It took less than 2 hours for 2 of us. Then after a few weeks, we decided to add the solid roof. The roof related bracket were even more impressive and made it so easy to build the roof frames. Very happy with all parts, instructions, and fast responses by staff.

    Built our lower structure very easily. Prepared all posts with floor anchor bracket and the 60 deg elbow bracket. Cut all headers and got them ready. With help from a friend and few sand bags, we had the lower structure assembled in less than 1 hour. We then made sure all headers were level before anchoring to the concrete pad. We anchored the floor brackets down and everything was very sturdy.
    We then prepared the six rafers with cross tie brackets and roof skirts. We made the starter assembly with the hexagon spider. It took us 5 minutes to lift and place this starter assembly and center it. After securing to post top rafter ties, it took another 30 minutes to install remaining rafters. It was so easy to do. We then added cross tie beams which fit easily and perfectly. That took another 2 hours to add them and drive all lag screws.
    Next day, we added roof deck plywood pieces and then drip edges, tar paper, shingles and ridge shingles.
    Everything went smoothly and all work was straight forward. We are very impressed with the cut lists and roof deck nesting diagrams they provided. That made our work so easy.
    We are now adding railings with ballusters between posts and decorative ballusters below the top headers.
    We are super impressed and highly recommend this kit.

RioOutdoors does not include hardcopy installation instrutions with its products. Instead, the instructions are provided online for viewing and downloading. Storing the installation instructions in one online location allows RioOutdoors to continually improve and update the installation instructions.

Every single part design is intended to provide high-end benefits to all DIY’ers.

All parts are constructed from 1/8″ thick, high strength steel. They are precision laser cut, precision formed, precision welded, inspected, and powder painted with exterior grade powder paint, which passes 200 hours of salt spray test, for a lifetime of rustproofing.

All products designed and manufactured by RioOutdoors will last beyond a lifetime. In fact, after 20 years of weather exposure, the lumber members may degrade or rot away, However, the RioOutdoors produced parts will last well beyond the lifetime of lumber members.

You may wish to rebuild the pergola structure again, in the future, using new lumber members.

Packaging Quality

Packaging quality comprises of correct parts, correct quantities, proper fillers and box, and accurate and informative labels.

RioOutdoors uses double-walled cardbord boxes to place each bracket with all hardware required to assemble and attach the bracket, in bags, taped to the inside surface of the bracket. The box label contains the bracket part number, description, and a QR Code which links to the bracket’s specific installation instructions video or .pdf file.

The value of packing the requried hardware with the individual bracket translates to the DIY customer finding the bracket and hardware together where and when it is needed. Unlike a large bulk packaged hardware bag that the DIY’er would normally have to sort through, we do the work of sorting the hardware in our factory to make it easy for our DIY customers.

The value of the QR Code link to the installation instructions is obvious. When you need to see how the part is installed at the construction site, simply take a pictue of the QR Code with your smartphone camera. This will automatically open the installation instructions for you to review and use.

Maintenance

Maintenance Information
  • The joinery brackets supplied by RioOutdoors.com do not require any maintenance. All brackets are coated with durable powder paint for rust-proofing.
  • The lumber members of the solid roof structure (rafters, cross tie beams, post top headers) do not require any maintenance because they are shielded permanently from sunlight and weather.
  • Other lumber members which are exposed to sunlight and weather, however, may require periodic maintanence depending on the type of lumber you selected and the type of sealant or paint you applied.
Adding vinyl sleeve protection
  • Various vinyl sleeves are available in the market which are designed to wrap around wood members. You may choose to add vinyl sleeves around posts to protect the post lumber members and eliminate future maintenance work. Just remember that vinyl sleeves must be installed during initial installation around the post lumber members and trimmed to the steel post-end brackets. The steel brackets are not designed to accept the extra thickness of the vinyl sleeves.
Lumber Maintenance
  • Maintenance requirements for lumber depends on the wood species used and the extent of sun and weather exposure to the lumber.
  • Cedar and redwood lumber require less maintenance due to their natural resistance to sun and weather.
  • Pressure treated pine is very resistant to rotting but discolors rapidly when exposed to sun and weather, thus requiring frequent resealing or painting.

Mounting on a fixed frame in square or rectangle openings in walls and ceilings, or over windows is possible.

Vertical Wall Mounting

This louver kit can be mounted on any fixed vertcial framed square or rectangle opening. In this configuration, the louver slats can be oriented horizontally or vertically.

Ceiling Mounting

This louver kit can be mounted in ceilings between rafters or in a framed opening to act as sunshades and partial rain shields. Although these louvers will stop rainfall from directly entering the living space when closed, the gaps between the 1×4 slats, the gaps between the U-clips, and the main brackets will allow water to drip into the living space.

Louver Slats Orientation

Horizontal Orientation

The most common applications will employ the horizontal orientation, meaning that the louver slats are mounted horizontally, the slat length runs left to right, and the slats rotate up and down.

Vertical Orientation

Depending on the functionality desired, the louver slats may be oriented vertically. In the vertical orientation, the louver slat length runs up and down and the louver slats rotate left to right. Vertically orienting the louver slats will allow wind flow direction control, horizontally. 

Louvers Slat Sizes

The DIY Louver Bracket kits are designed to use dimensional 1×4, actual 3/4″ x 3-1/2″ lumber members.

A maximum length of 60 inches is recommended for each louver slat.

Louver Slats Material Types

The louver bracket kits are designed to use dimensional 1×4 lumber measuring 3/4″ x 3-1/2″.

There are many varieties of wood slats available in dimensional 1×4 size.

The types of wood you can use are limited only by their availability in the required dimensional 1×4 size.

The wood you select is determined by cosmetic requirements, durability requirements, and your budget.

Research online to discover the wood slat options available.

The types of wood available in the market which you can consider using are:

  • Softwood
    Birch, Cedar, Fir, Pine, Redwood
  • Hardwood
    Alder, Balsa, Beech, Hickory, IPE, Mahogany, Maple, Oak, Teak, Tigerwood, Walnut, and others.

Composite Wood Slats are NOT recommended
Composite wood slats are NOT recommended because they are too flexible  in the length direction. This flexible characteristic causes sagging and bowing which is not desirable.

A miter saw is recommended for making straight cuts as required a the louver slats’ ends. Do not use a circular saw to make louver slats’ end cuts. A miter saw provides accurate straight cuts when compared to a common circular saw.

Ratchet  & Socket Drivers

A racket  & socket drivers are recommended to fully drive lag screws.

7/16″ Hex Socket

The 1/4″ x 1-1/4″ Lag Screws have a 7/16″ hex head. A 7/16″ Socket is required to drive the 7/16″ head lag screws.

9/16″ Hex Socket

The 3/8″ x 3″ Lag Screws used for raftered pergola brackets have a 3/8″ hex head. A 9/16″ Socket is required to drive the 3/8″ head lag screws.

3/32″ Drill Bit

A 3/32″ pilot hole is required if driving 1/4″ diameter lag screws into lumber.

Before driving 1/4″ diameter lag screws into lumber, a 3/32″ pilot hole, hole depth equal to length of screw, must be drilled to prevent the wood from cracking and to allow full lag screw penetration.

11/64″ Drill Bit

An 11/64″ pilot hole is required if driving 3/8″ diameter lag screws lumber.

Before driving 3/8″ diameter lag screws into lumber, an 11/64″” pilot hole, hole depth equal to length of screw,  must be drilled to prevent the wood from cracking and to allow full lag screw penetration.

1/2″ x 4″ Masonry Drill Bit

1/2″ diameter x 2-3/4″ concrete bull anchor bolts are included with floor anchor brackets. These anchors are to be employed to secure floor anchor brackets to concrete pads and concrete footings.

Use the 1/2″ x 4″ masonry drill bit to drill 1/2″ x 2-1/4″ deep holes in concrete pads and concrete footings.

Hammer Drill

A hammer drill (electric drill with optional hammer mode) is required to predrill holes in concrete pads, concrete footings, and masonry walls before proper anchor hardware are installed to secure floor anchor brackets or wall anchor brackets.

10″ Compound Miter Saw

A 10″ compound miter saw is recommended for making straight, angled, and compound angled cuts as required.  A 10″ sized saw will have the capability to cut compound angles in lumber members up to 2x8s. 

Alternatively, a sliding compound miter saw can be used as a better alternative. Sliding compound miter saws have the capability to cut lumber members up to 2x12s and beyond.
